Summer School on Educational Uses of 3D Graphics and Virtual Reality (SSVR '13)

University of the Aegean

15th-27th July, 2013
Rhodes island, Greece

Aims and Scope
--------------

SSVR '13 is addressed to anyone interested in the development and in-classroom implementation of advanced educational technology innovations. It is an excellent starting point for those seeking information and skills to make the necessary design, organizational and technical steps required for the construction and implementation of such applications.

In the context of these objectives, the summer school is built upon two pillars:

The first is theoretical. It consists of a general reflection on the modern educational trends and goals, the ways VR and 3D applications fit in the context of learning theories, how they contribute to the realization of didactical goals and how they compare to other ICT applications.

The second, being the largest part of our summer school, is practical and provides hands on experience. A full suite of software for the development of virtual environments is presented and analyzed. During this process, participants will form the self-perceived knowledge required to use this kind of practice. They will know how to use
specific software, they will confront its difficulties, and they will tackle problems they will encounter.

Course Description and Objectives
---------------------------------
The duration of our summer school is 13 days. Social events are included throughout the time span of the course. A one-day excursion to Rhodes' countryside will take place in the middle of the course. Participants will also have evenings free of any activities.
Course meetings (lectures, lab sessions, workshops and informal sessions) will last 3 academic hours each.
The outline of the program and the main topics are:
Theoretical part:
- Learning theories
- Modern pedagogy, teaching methods
- Educational ICT applications
- Distance Learning
- Life Long Learning
- Virtual Reality basics and features
- Virtual Reality and learning theories
- Features of Massive Online Multiplayer Games and 3D online virtual
worlds
- Tools and techniques for the evaluation of learning outcomes of 3D
virtual worlds
Practical part:
- Real time 3D graphics, interaction
- Importing 3D objects, converters
- Online, 3D, multi-user, multi-platform servers
- OpenSim: Installation and customization
- Voice and video in a virtual world
- 3D Viewers
- Virtual Agents, Non Playable Characters (NPC's)
- Scripting in OpenSim
- Development of an online, 3D, multi-user world
Participants' expected learning outcomes are:
- To be aware of the main learning theories, with emphasis on those that
justify using VR applications in the teaching process
- To be aware of the main and alternative teaching methods
- To know the basic features of educational software, with emphasis on
VR software
- To get acquainted with a number of ICT educational applications, with
emphasis on VR applications
- To be able to evaluate virtual worlds, using tools and metrics for
evaluating usability and learning outcomes
- To familiarize themselves with the software associated with the
production of digital material
- To know how to install and manage an online virtual world server
- To become familiar with voice and video servers installation and
management
- To know how to use virtual agents and non-playable characters
- To familiarize themselves with the use of scripts and the use of the
respective programming language
- To know how to use online virtual world's navigation programs
(viewers) and the way in which these programs allow creating and
enhancing an online virtual world
