Postdoc position: Development of sensor network and data gathering and analysis techniques for a car network to optimize vehicle flow and energy consumption.
The work is in the context of the EERNV Thalis-funded project and key objectives are:
To develop an RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) system for the identification of moving vehicles; such a system acquires information stored on a tag by reader RFID places several meters away in a wireless, automatic fashion, combining as necessary existing WiFi and cellular infrastructure. The implementation may include fixed RFID readers as part of the network’s infrastructure and RFID tags on vehicles or vice-versa, with mixed implementations appearing as the most promising.
To develop a wireless sensor network infrastructure collecting energy data and information about vehicles and road congestion. The system will use state-of-the-art algorithms and protocols for wireless networks, mobile ad hoc networks, and vehicular networks in order to operate efficiently and transfer these data to the central server.
To obtain algorithms determining network flows, paths and vehicle routes that are optimal with respect to both cost and energy efficiency.
To develop algorithms and methods for predicting the evolution of short-term traffic flow, as well as the onset and duration of congestion, using historical as well as streaming data collected from urban road networks;
Deliverables are prototype systems, simulations and most importantly research papers implementing and describing novel solutions to key problems in wireless sensor network data processing.
The work will be conducted in collaboration with the Department of Management Science and Technology of AUEB, the Department of Civil Engineering of NTUA, and the Department of Economics of the University of Patras.
The ideal candidate:
- has recently completed a PhD in Computer Science, in sensor networks, distributed systems, computer networks, or databases
- has demonstrated the ability to conduct both fundamental and applied work in these areas, proven by publications in international journals and conferences and working prototypes
- is both an accomplished programmer and mathematically sophisticated enough to conduct design and analysis of complex algorithms
